Our story

Light Horse Scouts was founded by Johnathon Mills, a former anti-poaching operator who spent time learning and working with wildlife protection teams in Southern Africa.

Inspired by what he saw — the urgency of the conservation crisis, the strength of mounted units in the field, and the need for men to have purpose — he returned to Australia with a mission:

To form a team of disciplined riders who could one day deploy in service of something greater than themselves.

Light Horse Scouts is the beginning of that mission — built not for show, but for service.

Why horses?

Horses allow us to move quietly, cover more ground, and blend into the terrain.
They also represent an older form of warfare—one that demands discipline, awareness, and presence.
Our mounted scouts are trained to operate in rugged terrain where vehicles fail.

Core values

We don’t take recruitment lightly. Every man in the Light Horse Scouts is selected for his discipline, strength of character, and commitment to something greater than himself.

These are the values that guide us:

  • Discipline – We train with focus, operate with control, and hold ourselves to a high standard.

  • Trust – We rely on one another completely. This bond is forged through challenge and shared purpose in the field.

  • Service – Our work exists to protect life, land, and those who cannot protect themselves.

  • Strength – Physical, mental, and moral strength form the backbone of who we are.

  • Legacy – We act today to preserve something meaningful for tomorrow — not just for ourselves, but for future generations.

our vision

Light Horse Scouts is building a modern mounted unit trained to support conservation efforts, protect wildlife, and serve communities in high-risk regions.

Our long-term vision is to deploy globally — starting in Africa — where we can assist with anti-poaching, deterrence patrols, and field-based security work in support of local partners.

We believe men thrive with purpose.
And the world benefits when that purpose is rooted in discipline, courage, and service.
